Hershner Hunter offers a collegial work environment. We conduct twice-yearly attorney retreats, and we encourage an active life outside of work. Located in the center of Eugene, Oregon, attorneys enjoy a cosmopolitan environment outside the hectic pace of a metropolitan area. The Hult Center provides cultural events continuously. Eugene can boast of a wide variety of fine restaurants. Both the University of Oregon and Oregon State University sponsor visiting lectures and provide many opportunities for the sport spectator. The coast is an hour’s drive to the west and ski resorts to the east can be reached in less than two hours. Hiking and water sport activities abound throughout the region. In addition, Oregon can boast of several destination golf courses.

Compensation & Benefits

We hire all of our associates with the expectation and desire that they become excellent lawyers and valued partners. To accomplish these goals, we have made a strong commitment to training.

Current starting salaries for associates are among the highest in Eugene. Associate salaries are adjusted upward annually to reflect increases in skill level and the cost of living. In addition to receiving a salary, associates who exceed established billable hour benchmarks are eligible for a bonus of up to twice their monthly salary.

New law school graduates are given a stipend during the summer to help cover living expenses prior to beginning work, reimbursement of moving expenses up to $1,000, reimbursement of the cost of the bar exam and bar review course, and a clothing allowance.

Training & Mentoring

Our training activities begin with a rotation program designed to give associates exposure to the major areas of our practice and to provide a basis for their later choice of specialty. Associates spend the first two years rotating through the Litigation and Business Transactions practice groups, working closely with one supervising partner from each of those groups. Associates also work closely with other partners in those departments during their rotation. After the first two years, the associate and the firm jointly determine an area of practice in which the associate will obtain additional training and experience.

We provide frequent feedback to associates through supervising partners and an annual evaluation by the administrative committee. Associates also conduct yearly evaluations of their training partners.

In addition to direct supervision by a partner, associates are provided with one or more mentors within the firm to provide counsel and advice in areas outside the technical practice of law, such as integration in the firm and community, professionalism and ethics, professional relationships and other similar matters.

Our legal assistants, paralegals and administrative support are dedicated to efficiency and accessibility, and committed to service with integrity. Many of the staff members – legal assistants, paralegals and administrative support — have been with the firm long-term, providing continuity and stability. With the help of the IT department, every practice area employs cutting-edge technology.
